A Little About Me
I am Althea Burton. I am an enthusiastic teacher candidate at York University, earning my qualification to teach at the Junior and Intermediate divisions. Before that, I completed my bachelor’s degree at Tyndale University, with a major in English and a minor in Psychology. My research thus far is in the area of inclusive education. My passion for an inclusive learning atmosphere is fuelled by the difficulties I dealt with in elementary school. My past has taught me the importance of embracing the exceptionality in each student in order to allow them to reach their full potential. In order to achieve this, I intend to build trust and confidence among my students and parents by creating judicious differential instructions that meet the needs of all students within the parameters that is consistent with the curriculum guidelines set by the ministry. My experiences, both personally and professionally, have provided the adaptive, organizing, multitasking, and communication skills required to guide students toward greater academic success. Yet, I acknowledge that there is so much to learn, and I am excited about continual development of my professional skills in order to provide quality education.

About My Experience
Recently, I had the pleasure of teaching math through a private institute. This program emphasizes an inquiry based/problem solving model that blends ideas, facts, and procedures. There was also a great emphasis on group activities that encourages students to articulate their thinking, demonstrate and observe a variety of ways of thinking.
It was there I acquired instructional skills that is guided and supportive. I provided descriptive feedback, developed collaborative learning skills, and learned to adjust the focus of instruction (scaffolding when necessary) to support my students’ needs.
I also had the pleasure to work with some amazing students at Oakdale Middle School for my practicum and you can read more here.
